The Story Behind the Artist

Yoshikazu's Yokohama pictures worked like visual news for people curious about foreigners, ships, clothing, and customs. Accuracy, rumor, and imagination sometimes mixed together, which is part of their fascination today: they record not only what Japan saw, but how Japan pictured the unknown.
