The Story Behind the Artist

Harunobu's rise was tied to the fashion for elaborately printed picture calendars in the 1760s. Competition among patrons encouraged printers to layer multiple color blocks with new precision, helping full-color nishiki-e emerge. A calendar craze helped change the future of Japanese printmaking.
