The Story Behind the Artist

Shunzan's audience knew the theater well enough to read a pose, costume, or facial expression as part of a specific performance. The print therefore acted as a compact stage: a silent image capable of bringing back the energy of an actor and role.

Each historic image is manually redrawn line by line for cleaner contours, clearer color separation, and a sharper wearable reproduction.
