The Story Behind the Artist

Before Shunsho and the Katsukawa school, actor faces were often treated as recognizable types. Shunsho helped make individual performers identifiable, allowing fans to recognize a favorite actor almost as they would recognize a celebrity photograph today.

Each historic image is manually redrawn line by line for cleaner contours, clearer color separation, and a sharper wearable reproduction.
