The Story Behind the Artist

Hokkei excelled at surimono, privately commissioned prints often exchanged by poetry circles. Because they were made for a limited audience rather than mass sale, printers could use unusually refined paper, metallic effects, embossing, and visual wordplay. They were closer to luxury art gifts than ordinary commercial prints.

Each historic image is manually redrawn line by line for cleaner contours, clearer color separation, and a sharper wearable reproduction.
