The Story Behind the Artist

Kyosai trained in both the formal Kano tradition and the popular world of ukiyo-e, then became famous for astonishingly energetic brushwork. At public painting gatherings he could turn rapid strokes into animals, spirits, or comic figures before an audience, making the act of drawing itself a performance.
