Collection: Utagawa Kunisada Ukiyo-e
Explore hand-traced ukiyo-e T-shirts featuring works by Utagawa Kunisada.
Utagawa Kunisada, later known as Toyokuni III, stood at the center of the Utagawa school and became one of the most prolific artists of the Edo period. His actor portraits and images of fashionable urban life captured the theater, style, and popular culture of his day.
The Story Behind the Artist
Kunisada treated kabuki actors much like modern culture treats movie stars. Fans could recognize a performer's face, costume, role, and stage presence from a single print, then take that image home. His enormous output became a visual record of who and what Edo audiences were talking about.
Each historic image is manually redrawn line by line for cleaner contours, clearer color separation, and a sharper wearable reproduction.
