Toyohara Kunichika carried the drama of ukiyo-e into the rapidly modernizing Meiji era. Known especially for vivid kabuki portraits, he used intense color and close-up compositions to preserve the excitement and personality of the stage.

The Story Behind the Artist

Kunichika kept the woodblock portrait alive while photography and Western printing were arriving in Japan. Instead of retreating from the new age, he pushed closer to the actor's face and intensified the color. Many of his portraits work like nineteenth-century theater posters: immediate, dramatic, and built to stop the eye.
