Utagawa Yoshitora was a pupil of Kuniyoshi who worked as Japan opened more fully to the outside world. Alongside warriors and historical subjects, his prints pictured foreign people, ships, and distant places, turning a changing world into vivid popular imagery.

The Story Behind the Artist

Some of Yoshitora's foreign scenes were made when reliable visual information about distant countries was still scarce. Imported pictures, reports, observation, and imagination could meet in the same print. For many viewers, these images functioned as an exciting first window onto a world they might never visit.

Each historic image is manually redrawn line by line for cleaner contours, clearer color separation, and a sharper wearable reproduction.
